Description:
At break. Machadodorp - a lot of trees at station - pepper, eucalyptus, pine, weeping willow, apricot, pear and grape. County less settled than at Akron, but looks a good deal like it. Where irrigated, wheat, oats and weeping willow. Blue or granite rock near the surface. Over this the river cuts down - grasses come to water's edge. Many white amaryllis here. Grass continues down a long way. Many flowers here, yellow lily, fire red lily, Elephantorrhiza - and hundreds of old Kaffir locations. Most of country burned - but pure grass, no trees. Bracken along the bank. Then drop over edge through a series of tunnels and deep cuts. [Shantz travel journal, Oct. 18, 1919]
