Farther west - shows Artemisia with black brush in back, also composite. Brush marks more rocky soil - while Aristida, the sandy or deep soil. Soil often 3 or more feet deep - pure red, no change until rock is reached. [Shantz travel journal, Sep. 17, 1919]
